One of the joyful mysteries on Monday was the nativity of baby Jesus. This story came to mind last night, leading me to reminisce about the birth of my first child. I remember when my pregnancy reached around seven months, the size of my bump felt significant. It was as if she was holding onto my tummy, yet I couldn’t fathom putting her down for a moment’s rest.

In addition, considering the little family’s journey, God tasked them with traveling to Bethlehem from Nazareth—a distance of approximately 150 kilometers—by riding a donkey. I imagined myself as Mary, carrying Jesus in her womb, needing to sit on a donkey for around four days. Joseph, too, had to lead the journey, ensuring his family coped well with the long trip.

When asked about what makes me happy, I tend to envision anything that is comfortable and easy—like spending time on the beach with my kids, enjoying the landscape, and simply having some rest. The thought of waking up every morning to push myself forward isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind.

However, Jesus’s nativity story reminds me that the joyful mystery isn’t solely about comfort. It’s about finding utmost joy, even amidst tiring and painful moments. It’s about trusting His direction and continuing to move forward.

Today, whatever stage of the journey we find ourselves in, let’s remember that God is actively working with us. He is shaping something good within us day by day, transforming our sorrow into joy. Let’s bring our burdens to Jesus and allow Him to perfect them according to His way. As John 16:20 says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.” (LGA)
